Freakout

Okay..to make a long story short....Wednesday was my last day of work..after 15 wonderful years..life never felt so good...had an awesome retirement party/ roast. The people I worked with were some of the finest people I have ever met.
Job offers...

#1 Homeland Security in Grand Rapids...Minimal Pay scale..45 minute drive one way..hours are all flexible...1st 2nd and sometimes 3rd shift depending on when you are needed. Stay in Michigan
#2 Sales position in San Diego Ca..8 months of sales training including 10 hour days Monday through Friday...huge profits and commission.. great business that made Forbes top ten list in 2005 for growth potential and stock advancement. Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance with bonuse and rewards when you do well with sales. (3 year employee just created record sales of 200G for the year) It would be fairly easy to make this in under four years time if you apply yourself and are self motivated with good communication skills and persistance..

Decisions are slowly driving me carazy..yep I misspelt that on purpose CARAZY!! Can't sleep...decisions are sometimes harder to make thatn you can fathom alone..I have talked to numerous individuals and been given numerous opinions that I take into consideration.
Still.. I know not what to do..there is soo much involved in this ONE decision...Please pray for me or wish me luck or whatever it is you feel like doing in easing my bewilderment and confusion. Michelle and I have been praying for guidance and a final decision for the last two or three weeks.

Just when you think it's all going to be a cakewalk...someone drops a banana peel in your path.

Peace..Love...Drums..
And may God Bless you all

Well , of course the 2nd job offer sounds better to me. But you would have to pick up your family and move them to another world. New schools, etc... Very tough decision. But if you dont , will you regret it. Might as well just "do it". You can always move back. There will always be family, friends, loved ones to help you out with anything you need. And I do mean us "johnsons" . We will be here if and when you need us. Life is a roller coaster right? The ups and downs of it, is better than a straight narrow boring ride.

Ok. no one else is going to say it, because they don't want to rain on your parade and don't want to make your decision any harder, but I think you're making a big mistake.

Now that's just my oppinion and you ultimately have to do what you think is best for your family, but please... Please! Do your homework and listen to your brain not just your heart on this one.

Moving away is not going to allow you to escape the problems and difficulties you face here. Only hard work, commitment and determination will see you through to the end of that. Many of us know very well how tough things are right now. We are all in your same boat.

If you get a job making a hundred grand that would be great, but be very careful when you think that it is going to equate out to the same thing as a hundred grand here. The cost of living in San Diego, CA is around 40% higher than living here. That means if you were making forty grand here and a hundred grand there you are basically about even.

I just want you to make sure you do your homework and go with your eyes open not just because of things like "I heard they make a lot of money out there" and "I always wanted to go out there" and things like that.

I hope you don't take this the wrong way... I'm not trying to rain on your parade, but I'm affraid you are trying to find greener pastures on the other side of the hill and am scared you won't find out until too late that the grass is the same color no matter where you go.

What ever you decide I wish you good luck with it and hope you and your family will be happy.

Thanks to the Big Dog!!
We are not leaving because of problems..we are just seeking a location with a greater opportunities and much more benefits as far as potential and growth are concerned. I have in no way given up on this particular area..we love it here..I am looking for employment here as well.
And from my many travels..it holds true..the grass is greener wherever we live!!!

I actually agree with Big Dog on this one. He speaks truth. I have several opinions on what you should do with your life too, but [insert "opinions are like" metaphor here]. The prayer room is in business this week. Since you're not working anymore I'd be glad to hook you up with a bunch of hours.

Wade, I kinda let you know my opinion on the California move when I was home last time. Mark has alot of good points to consider carefully. I grew up spending summers in LA with my dad and it's a different world there. The cost of living is very high and doesn't make the salary adjustment mean much if anything due to the cost of living, job turnover is very high, people typically are not midwestern minded in being neighborly(in my experience), and you get to deal with earthquakes, fires, and some nasty snakes and spiders while there. Did I ever tell you about the time my dad killed 2 black widows in my room??? Anyway...If you are looking for something different, like sales, why not look closer to family and friends. Check out the chicago tribune if you are looking for a move not to far from home. It is not easy being away from family, even if they aren't terribly supportive with the kids and stuff. Jim and I have worked hard to make friends here and have been lucky enough to have a nice support network here, but it took alot of years to get to this point. And there is really never any substitute for family. Even if the grandparents complain, I'm sure they couldn't imagine not being able to be there and see the grandkids grow up. I'm sure Ca isn't the only locale with sales jobs. They are a dime a dozen. As far as the govt. job, is there opportunity to transfer to different depts over time? Is there opportunity to move up? If it's a federal job, I would think the opportunity for better income and benefits would be in the plan. anyway, do what cha gotta do, just make damn sure that all these changes in your life, at your age, are not part of a midlife crisis.:) Tread carefully and know that your friends all love and support you no matter what you decide.
